Since her creation in 1941 Wonder Woman has been continuously published by DC Comics in a male-dominated comic book world and is largely regarded as the first feminist superhero and was perhaps the only one for the longest time Before Wonder Woman appeared in December 1941 female superheroes mainly played the roles of sidekicks while other female characters in the comic books assumed the roles of helpless women in need of saving The character was the brainchild of American psychologist William Marston who believed that women were “motivated by love” whereas men were motivated by “appetite” “selfishness and greed” The dominant thought during that time was that women’s roles were essentially that of wives and mothers and Marston wanted to challenge that thought to give women more authority in public space and positions in political social and economic institutions Wonder Woman was unlike any other female character to have been created in American popular culture She was introduced to the world in All Star Comics Volume 1 #8 as Diana the Amazonian princess from the imaginary Paradise Island Diana was stronger than men and had “a hundred times the agility and strength of our best male athletes and strongest wrestlers” according to her introduction in the comic She was introduced to the world in All Star Comics Volume 1 #8 as Diana the Amazonian princess from the imaginary Paradise Island (Source: dcwikiacom) Wonder Woman’s appearance coincides with the United States’ entry into the Second World War and she embodied many characteristics that women at that time aspired to have and were inspired to have with the men away at war The Wonder Woman comics were filled with references topical to that time and they continue to remain so In an acknowledgement of the war the introductory comic also serves to explain how the Amazonian princess end up in the United States The comic opens with US Army Intelligence pilot Steve Trevor who is seen flying his fighter plane across the Atlantic in search of a Nazi spy After his jet runs out of fuel he crash lands on the imaginary Paradise Island Diana and Mala two Amazonians help him to a hospital where Diana continues to take care of him falling in love in the process Queen Hippolyta reminds her daughter Diana that men are forbidden on Paradise Island and that Trevor needs to be returned to the United States when he is fit for travel While Trevor recuperates Queen Hippolyta using powers of divination learns of Trevor’s history and his mission to fight the Nazis The queen then decides to aid America in its war and declares her intention to send an Amazonian to the United States to fight against the Nazis Although Diana wishes to participate in the tournament that will decide who gets to fight for the country her mother refuses Diana participates under a disguise and wins the tournament Queen Hippolyta relents and provides her with her now iconic costume and bestows upon her the name Wonder Woman Wonder Woman’s origins are integral to the development of her character and the progression of the comic book plots because they hint at Marston’s emphasis on women being motivated by love and affection Wonder Woman is a character who keeps reminding the other female characters who appear in the comics to believe in themselves and to be confident qualities necessary to become leaders Hence in the early 1970s the character was adopted as a feminist icon for being a strong positive role model for the feminist movement However what solidified Wonder Woman’s identity as a feminist icon was when she was featured on the cover of Ms magazine in 1972 under Gloria Steinem’s editorial leadership What solidified Wonder Woman’s identity as a feminist icon was when she was featured on the cover of Ms magazine in 1972 under Gloria Steinem’s editorial leadership (Source: storemsmagazinecom) A few years prior to Wonder Woman gracing the cover of Ms magazine the character underwent a drastic change On the cover of Wonder Woman #178 the character had transformed into her alter-ego Diana Prince wearing a purple dress with leather boots with a psychedelic background behind her holding a can of blue paint which she had used to cross out a poster of herself in her old Wonder Woman costume and her old military uniform The cover was meant to indicate that Woman Woman was moving in a new direction and that Diana Prince would be featured in her new avatar The changes in the character were a result of flagging sales of Wonder Woman comics In Wonder Woman #178 she accidentally sends her boyfriend Trevor to jail Considering the situation Wonder Woman decides that she needs to change because living with her superhero alter ego was causing problems for the two of them She sheds her Wonder Woman costume and transforms to a new more chic look Perhaps even more significant is Trevor reconsidering Wonder Woman causing her to realise “I’ll lose him forever if I don’t do something to keep him interested in me Wonder Woman must change” On the cover of Wonder Woman #178 the character had transformed into her alter-ego Diana Prince (Credit: Neha Banka Kanoria) A critic of the new avatar of Wonder Woman and a fan of the original version of the character Gloria Steinem decided to put Wonder Woman on the cover of the first issue of Ms magazine In the magazine was an essay by Joanne Edgar “Wonder Woman Revisited” that denounced the changes that DC Comics had brought to the character The criticism led to the reinstatement of Wonder Woman’s original traits and costume and on the cover of Issue #204 she returned in the familiar avatar Wonder Woman’s physicality has often been questioned by critics as being overtly sexual in addition to the kind of costume she wears However Marston explained that he had wanted the costume to be more functional than anything else given her crime-fighting storyline Themes of bondage in the Wonder Woman comics have also been criticised and Marston’s response to it was straightforward— it was meant to show how Wonder Woman was able to overcome and break the chains that had been used by her evil adversary to tie her up purely through her will and determination It was in a way meant to symbolise women breaking the shackles of male domination and oppression Although other superheroes had already gotten television time Wonder Woman’s chance came in 1973 in an animated cartoon version of Justice League of America called Super Friends The concept of real individual portraying Wonder Woman on screen came about in 1974 with a film made for television called ‘Wonder Woman’ starring Cathy Lee Crosby The film tanked but that wasn’t the end of Wonder Woman on screen The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) picked up the concept of Wonder Woman and broadcast a pilot episode in 1975 starring Lynda Carter a former Miss World USA Although ABC dropped the series after one season CBS (another American broadcasting company) picked it up and modernised it Lynda Carter retained her original role and now remains forever associated with the character The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) picked up the concept of Wonder Woman and starring Gal Gadot in the title role to celebrate the Amazonian’s birthday and history On October 21 the United Nations designated Wonder Woman as it’s honorary ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls and thedecision to appoint a fictional character has caused the organisation to face immense criticism However the selection of Wonder Woman could not have come at a worse time for the blocks the union cabinet cleared a blueprint to acquire the land of these mines Related News The NDA government on Monday took a decisive step to resolve the uncertainty stemming from the Supreme Court’s decision to cancel coal mining allotments made between 1993 and 2010 Four weeks after the apex court quashed the allocation of 214 coal blocks the union cabinet cleared a blueprint to acquire the land of these mines along with the plants built on it through an ordinance with the aim of e-auctioning them While Central and state government companies would be directly allocated captive mines on “priority basis” the blueprint significantly incorporates an “enabling provision” for amending the Coal Mines Nationalisation Act 1973 in the future with the objective of allowing commercial mining by private players — a move that is being seen as a radical reform measure as and when it happens READ:Government plays safe on coal auctions Briefing reporters after a cabinet meeting here Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who rejoined office on Monday after a prolonged health-related break said: “The Cabinet has recommended promulgation of an ordinance to the President in order to resolve the pending issues particularly the situation arising out of the Supreme Court judgment quashing the allocation of the coal blocks A key need for the ordinance was to ensure proper transfer of land from the existing owner to the successful bidder to whom the land is to be allotted” he said The apex court on August 25 had held that all coal blocks allocations since 1993 by various regimes at theCentre have been made illegally and arbitrarily The apex court had on September 24 quashed allocation of 214 out of 218 coal blocks terming the allotment methodology as “flawed” and allowed the central government to take over operations of 42 functional mines Drafted by the Coal Ministry after extensive consultations with Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi the ordinance envisages that successful bidders in the e-auction would be mandated to pay the earlier allottee the cost of the land and the investments that went into the end-use plant In reply to a query Jaitley made it clear that there would be no right of first refusal and all bidders would have to compete in the e-auction through reverse bidding As far as the users of coal are concerned private entities in businesses such as power ironand steel and cement for so-called captive consumption will have to bid for such mines through e-auction The auction process would be “transparent” and completed in “three to four months” and the proceeds would go to the state governments where the mines are located Jaitley said “The entire mess that the UPA left behind from 2005 onwards will be cleaned up over the next four months” he said adding that coal worth $20 billion that was being imported annually would be domestically substituted through this measure The Finance Minister said the biggest beneficiaries would be the eastern states like Jharkhand Orissa West Bengal and Chhattisgarh while states like Madhya Pradesh Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh would also benefit “This will financially empower the eastern states particularly (as they have most of the mines) and lakhs of labourers would get employment while bank capital held up with the allottee companies would be fruitfully utilised” he said Responding to a query on whether the Coal Mines Nationalisation Act 1973 would be amended to allow commercial mining Coal and Power Minister Piyush Goyal said an enabling provision for future commercial use of mines would form part of the amendment “This is only for the future There will be an enabling provision for the future where rules which are framed for commercial users of mines could also be decided by the central government This would lead to optimal utilisation of the natural resource” he said This process would not impact the structure of Coal India “It will continue to function as it is and all the mining requirements of CIL for the present and future will be adequately protected” he added On allowing foreign players in the e-auction Jaitley said only companies incorporated in India would be allowed to participate in the bidding for which the reserve floor price would be determined by a committee He said the auction would be sector-specific Commenting on the decision Kalpana Jain Senior Director Deloitte in India said: “While the public sector companies like NTPC and State Electricity Boards will continue to be allocated coal mines on priority basis the move to e-auction identified blocks for private sector users is most welcome The decision paves the way for utilisation of the mines effectively What remains to be understood is how investments made by earlier allottees as well as banks are going to be addressed given that no right of first refusal is proposed for these allottees” For all the latest India News download Indian Express App More Related NewsBy: Express Web Desk | New Delhi | Published: November 5 2016 2:34 pm Ravish Kumar during prime time on NDTV Top News Support poured in from across the country for Hindi news channel NDTV India after the Information and Broadcasting ministry announced that the channel will be taken off-air for 24 hours on November 9 because of its coverage on Pathankot terror attacks The ministry’s panel said NDTV’s reporting compromised national security However it did not take much time when people from within the media fraternity and outside questioned government’s move to single out NDTV when most of the channels reported the Pathankot attack somewhat similarly Everyone waited for Ravish Kumar’s prime time on Friday – first after announcement of the ban – to see what was in store Ravish – who has carved a niche for himself for his unconventional style of reporting anchoring and long monologues which sometimes stretch for more than 10 minutes – did not disappoint as he invited mime artists on his show to put forward his point ‘Prime Time’ show began with a short presentation on Delhi’s growing pollution with Ravish’s narration with indirect references to the ban on NDTV and how the situation for a reminiscent of the emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government He then went on to share the ages-old Sanskrit fable of young ‘Nachiketa’ who infuriates his father by questioning his deeds in an attempt to make a connection between government’s crackdown on the channel and suppressing the freedom of press The mime artists tried to depict how the situation will turn out to be if those who asked questions were silenced by the government On the other hand it also tried to hint at the government’s attitude of avoiding question and keeping mum As the NDTV prime time began at 9 pm on Friday social media users started putting out posts appreciating the scribe for another ‘unique’ attempt at taking on the establishment Within minutes Ravish Kumar became a top tend on micro-blogging website Twitter managing to remain there till Saturday morning Not long ago Ravish had drawn praise after a special episode questioning the ‘sensational’ style of reporting by news channels during the JNU episode On the other hand he has not been untouched by the criticism sometimes reaching a point of ridicule and harassment The Telegraph on its front page lead on Saturday ran a story with a similar analogy with a headline ‘something is rotten in the state of Delhi’ On the other hand the anchor faced criticism for giving the episode a ‘different turn’ Many alleged that NDTV and Ravish – in his prime time – tried to portray that government’s action against the channel was because of it questioning the administration while it was done to penalise them for putting security of the country in jeopardy A report by Factly on Saturday revealed that the I&B Ministry had taken action in only 88 cases since 2013 related to airing of ‘questionable’ content while it received thousands of complaints This reinforces the point as to why the Ministry decide to target only one news channel and is there really a motive to muzzle its voice An Indian Express report Saturday also showed that it was yet to be proved whether the ‘two terrorists’ in question about whom the channel had reported actually existed The report also mentions that other channels like News24 ABP and AajTak had also gave out similar information in their reports However the government stood firm on the decision with Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu saying that the ‘delayed criticism’ of ministry’s decision was politically motivated and that the ban was imposed to ensure ‘national security’ was not compromised While NDTV and Ravish Kumar managed to garner support using the unconventional approach they failed to bring to light the facts that corroborated their point of view The channel did not reveal what options it was considering to challenge the decision Instead most of such information seemed to come from other media houses and individuals Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju also posted on his Facebook account on Saturday that he had spoken with Ravish and told him that the ban on NDTV was illegal “Live coverage means showing scenes of security forces searching or pursuing terrorists or fighting with them Mere reporting about anti terrorist operations is not live coverage NDTV had only reported about anti terrorist operations but had not shown any scenes of security forces chasing or fighting with terrorists So there was no live coverage The ban was therefore clearly illegal” wrote Katju Meanwhile the tussle between government and media continues and it will only be revealed on November 9 whether the one-day ban on NDTV India is enforced or not Political leaders like Arvind Kejriwal Yogendra Yadav among others have called for people and other media organisations to show their solidarity with the channel too Prime Minister Narendra Modi however has not made any statement
