FTSE investors: Can the gold price reach a new record high in July?

first_imgFTSE investors: Can the gold price reach a new record high in July? Tezcan Gecgil, PhD | Sunday, 28th June, 2020 I would like to receive emails from you about product information and offers from The Fool and its business partners. Gold recently hit a high for 2020. The spot price is up over 13% year-to-date, hovering at $1,765 per ounce. In late June it went over $1,775 to see its highest level in almost a decade. Our readers may remember that it had hit an all-time record of $1,900 in September 2011.The performance of FTSE shares is usually negatively correlated to gold, which tends to do well when there is fear in equity markets. As we start the second half of the year, do you also think there is a case to be made for gold? Then there are several ways you can include the shiny metal in your portfolio.5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…Catalysts behind the price of goldNews headlines regarding a second wave Covid-19 cases, especially in Asia, Latin America, and the US, are hitting the wires worldwide. Volatility has once again kicked in broader markets, including many FTSE shares. The past week has seen the FTSE 100 gyrate between 6,335 and 6,050. Given the health and economic effects of the pandemic, investor sentiment may soon turn bearish again. Then it’d not be surprising to see main stock indexes swing lower soon.Such weakness in equity markets could be good for the price of gold, which is usually regarded as a ‘safe haven’. For hundreds of years, it has been as anstore of wealth and a hedge against economic or political uncertainties. Market participants have turned bullish on the precious metal in 2020 also due to the cheap money that is available worldwide. Many central banks, including the Bank of England, have cut interest rates further to help ease the pain of economic uncertainty. Economists are nervous as more debt has been issued and more money created than at any other time in history. There tends to be a negative correlation between interest rates and gold. How to include gold in your portfolioA diversified portfolio should ideally be made up of different asset classes. Many analysts recommend holding up to 10% of your investment in gold. Buying the physical asset is one option. In the UK, you can purchase the shiny metal through the Royal Mint Bullion. You may also consider investing in exchange-traded funds (ETFs), such as the WisdomTree Physical Gold ETF or the Invesco Physical Gold ETC. Owning some gold through miners may be another way to stay ahead of the curve. Which gold-mining shares would I consider backing? I’d start my research with companies that have strong asset bases, experienced management, and robust balance sheets.Within the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250, companies that mine gold include Chile’s Antofagasta, Mexico-based Fresnillo, Russian operation Polymetal International, and Centamin, which focuses on the the Arabian-Nubian Shield. So far in 2020, the returns for these four companies have been -1%, 31%, 33%, and 40%, respectively.Investors should note that most gold stocks are low dividend-payers. So they may not be appropriate for passive income investing. Finally, there are investment funds that invest in various miners. They include the BlackRock Gold and General, UBS Solactive Pure Gold Miners ETF, and iShares Gold Producers UCITS ETF.Foolish takeawayAll asset classes have their advantages and disadvantages. I believe the rally in gold will likely push the price over $1,800 in 2020. However, as always, research your investments carefully and invest in companies your really believe have a long-term future. “This Stock Could Be Like Buying Amazon in 1997” Renowned stock-picker Mark Rogers and his analyst team at The Motley Fool UK have named 6 shares that they believe UK investors should consider buying NOW.So if you’re looking for more stock ideas to try and best position your portfolio today, then it might be a good day for you. RSF calls for a fully transparent investigation after mine kills two journalists in Azerbaijan

Help by sharing this information to go further Newscenter_img Siraj Abyshev, a cameraman with state-owned AzTV, and Maharram Ibragimov, a reporter for the state news agency AzerTag, were on their way to report in the village of Susuzlug when their vehicle ran over an anti-tank mine in Azerbaijan’s Kalbajar region a few kilometers from the Armenian border shortly before midday on 4 June. The explosion also killed an Azerbaijani official and injured four other people.Hundreds of people attended funeral services for the two journalists on 5 June in the capital, Baku, and the city of Sumgait.“The deaths of these two Azerbaijani journalists is tragic news for the entire media profession,” said Jeanne Cavelier, the head of RSF’s Eastern Europe and Central Asia desk. “Other journalists wanting to report in this region could suffer the same fate or could be deterred from going. We remind the Azerbaijani authorities that they have a duty to protect journalists when they are working, and we ask them to shed all possible light on this tragic accident and to conduct a fully transparent investigation.”They are the first journalists to be killed in the territories taken over by Azerbaijan near the Nagorno-Karabakh, since the end of last autumn’s war over the disputed region, which is located within Azerbaijan but has a mainly Armenian population. At least seven journalists were injured during the war.Despite the signing of a Russian-brokered ceasefire and the deployment of Russian peacekeepers, tension is still high in the region, with the two countries disagreeing over border demarcation. It is regarded as one of the world’s most heavily-mined regions and Azerbaijan says its attempts to demine the areas it now controls are being hampered by Armenia’s refusal to provide maps showing where it placed mines. The Armenian authorities contacted by RSF have not responded to these accusations and have not commented on the deaths of the two Azerbaijani journalists.Armenia is ranked 63rd out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2021 World Press Freedom Index while Azerbaijan is ranked 167th. Honouring South Africans who fought in World War I

first_imgIt has been a century since South African and other soldiers lost their lives in World War I. The refurbishment of the Delville Wood South African National Memorial in France means that every South African soldier who fought is now honoured. Previously the contribution of black soldiers was sidelined. South Africa’s participation in World War I is commemorated with the refurbishment of the Delville Wood South African National Memorial to include all the soldiers of all races who lost their lives in the battle and the war. (Image: Yusuf Abramjee, Twitter)Priya PitamberIt is little known that a century ago South African troops from all races fought in one of the bloodiest battles in World War I.The Battle of Delville Wood took place in France, in July 1916. It was a series of engagements in the 1916 Battle of the Somme between the armies of the German Empire and the British Empire and was the first major clash South Africa undertook during the Great War. The commander, Brigadier General Lukin, received the order to “take and hold the wood at all costs” from 14 to 20 July 1916.“For six days and five nights a soldier was killed every minute, with one South African soldier dying every three minutes,” said President Jacob Zuma during the centenary commemoration at the site of the battle. “The brigade was tasked to ‘break through the enemy lines by any means necessary’.”Out of 3 153 men who entered Delville Wood, only 142 walked out alive.Watch this in-depth look at South Africa’s contribution to World War I:A history forgottenBlack soldiers who enlisted formed the South African Native Labour Corps (SANLC), but its contribution has largely been ignored in military records.“The SANLC has hardly received any attention in South African histories,” noted the Department of Military Veterans. “Nor did they receive any medals for their participation in the war.”The original Delville Wood South African National Memorial was inaugurated in 1926 at Deville Wood, built on a 63ha piece of land bought by author and politician Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, and presented to South Africa. “The representation of Africans during the war is very minimal and it distorts the important role they played in various theatres of war,” said the department. The SANLC mainly provided a supportive role to soldiers because they weren’t allowed to carry weapons for two reasons, said Zuma.“First, giving black and white South Africans the same roles in the war was seen to accord blacks the same status as whites, contrary to the then dominant political ideology.“Secondly, General Louis Botha and the ruling white elite feared that training blacks in the handling of firearms would empower them to, in future, use such military expertise to fight white supremacy.”Black soldiers were also buried not in Delville, but in other areas in France.“The injustice that we have to redress is that the Delville Wood Memorial Museum in the past reflected a very biased South African military history,” said Zuma. The refurbished memorial is now reflective of the full story of South Africa’s contribution to the war.The battle of #DelvilleWood became one of the deadliest Somme engagements of WWI. @PresidencyZA @VeteransZA pic.twitter.com/1QGFd2IsVR— France in S. Getting the Right Minisplit

Curious readers regularly post questions here at GBA on how to size minisplit heat pumps and how to select the right equipment. Although our web site contains dozens of articles on the topic, the questions keep coming — so it’s time to provide some straightforward guidance on this issue. The first required step for anyone who wants to install HVAC equipment is to perform a room-by-room load calculation. In other words, the designer needs to calculate the anticipated heating load for each room under the coldest likely conditions, as well as the anticipated cooling load for each room under the hottest likely conditions. Although most people have heard of load calculations, which are code-required, this step is often ignored.Getting an accurate load calculation isn’t easy; most HVAC contractors grossly overestimate design heating loads and design cooling loads. For more information on obtaining an accurate load calculation, see these articles:The typical bedroom has a design heating load of 2,500 BTU/h or less — far less than the rating on a typical ductless minisplit head, which usually ranges from 9,000 to 12,000 BTU/h. If your HVAC contractor is advising you to install a separate minisplit head in each bedroom, it’s probably time to choose a different contractor. (Of course, an unusually large bedroom that is poorly insulated, leaky, or equipped with very large windows may have a much higher design heating load than average — so it always pays to do the math.)Instead of installing a ductless minisplit head in each bedroom, a better approach would be to install a minisplit head in a nearby common room — perhaps the living room or hallway — or to select a ducted unit instead of a ductless unit.According to GBA reader Dana Dorsett, a self-taught minisplit expert, “In most houses the ‘head in… center_img This article is only available to GBA Prime Memberslast_img read more
